Frequently Asked Questions
What is a zine?
Short for "fan magazine," a fanzine is a group effort undertaken by people who enjoy a particular piece of media -- in this case, Destiny -- to collaborate and create art. You might call them artbooks! Some have a theme, some are more general, but all are made with lots of love and passion. How many people will you need?
A full deck of tarot cards has 78, so we'll be looking for upwards of 70 artists to participate in this deck! While the goal is to have every artist work on one card, things always come up during production and any cards whose artists have to drop out will be offered up to our pool of artists and pinch-hitters for completion. Will this be printed and/or sold?
Unfortunately not! We will be releasing all 78 cards, including a backing image, for free download to anyone who would like them. Anyone who downloads is most welcome to have the cards printed into a physical deck on their own (for personal use only, no selling), but at this time the staff are not able to dedicate the time to a full-scale physical production of that nature. How will artists be compensated?
Since no money or physical items are involved, there really is no compensation other than the enjoyment of hanging out with other Destiny players and doing some fun art together. All the artists have the freedom to sell their individual card art as prints and print their own decks for personal use, but full decks may not be printed for sale. What's with the suit names?
We've assigned an item to each suit of the Minor Arcana -- Hive blades for Swords, Cabal chalices for Cups, DSC augments for Wands, and Vex oracles for Pentacles -- to represent each of Destiny's original enemy races. Additionally, each suit is associated with an element -- fire, earth, air, or water -- which we have supplanted with one of the game's four subclasses -- Solar, Void, Arc, or Stasis. These are purely thematic changes to make the deck a little more customized towards Destiny! Artists have the choice to incorporate these things into their cards or not. What do I need to do to apply?
You'll need to read our guidelines and rules carefully and fill out our application form!
We're looking for artists with knowledge of Destiny's world and characters, a good grasp of basic art concepts, ability to handle symbolism-heavy imagery, backgrounds, armor and weapons, and objects, and someone who can assist us with creating border art for each of the 5 suits of cards! More details in the application form.
When applying, please submit only fully finished work of the level of quality you intend to produce for this deck. Sketches and work that is too time-consuming to be completed within the project deadline are not acceptable. Please do not submit NSFW art, and NFT supporters need not apply. Examples of Destiny art are strongly encouraged, but not required. How will artists and cards be paired?
The staff have already assigned characters/items/locations to all 78 cards; the full list can be viewed here. The application form gives each artist the opportunity to list cards and characters they would prefer to draw, and those they would like to avoid. Based on each applicant's style and their preferences, we will assign each artist a card when sending out acceptance emails.
Please note that, while we will do our level best to make everyone happy, we cannot guarantee that every artist will get their preferred card/character, and we ask everyone to be flexible! How will we communicate?
A Discord account is required to participate in this project; all artists will be given an invite link to our community Discord server, where all check-ins and other interactions will take place! My question isn't covered here!
Please DM us on Twitter with any questions!
Project Guidelines
While artists will be given as much freedom as possible to create their cards, we do have some preferences and suggestions to make applicants aware of.While you are welcome to take inspiration from famous tarot decks such as the Ryder-Waite deck, we don't want this to be that deck redrawn with Destiny characters. We encourage all our artists to put their own spin and style on each card and do what they feel expresses the concept and feeling of each card most clearly, without overly-heavily referencing or copying that particular deck. Use dynamic poses, bright colors, symbols, anything you like to your advantage!
In that vein, artists are encouraged to take the number and suit of each card into account when drawing -- placing 3 of a particular object on the 3 of Chalices, for example, or including a Hive Sword in a Blades card, are all excellent ways to provide visual interest and make the deck feel cohesive.Unless a character has no canon appearance, like Sjur Eido or Jolyon Till, we ask that everyone stick to the canon appearances of the characters featured. We want to see your unique styles at play, but we ask that each character be recognizable as themself. Where things are open to interpretation, you're encouraged to put your own spin on those characters, but include items or features that we know to belong to them to help make them easily identifiable.
Unless invited to, we ask that specific player Guardians not be featured in art. There are a couple instances where an artist will be allowed to customize the Guardians featured on a card, but outside of those instances, please avoid inserting other Guardians or giving them specific outfits/features. More direction on this will be provided to the artists to whom it is relevant. Some cards will feature canon couples, such as Mara and Sjur, or Saint and Osiris. Artists responsible for those cards are welcome to take their art in a romantic direction (but please keep it PG!). Outside of those instances, we ask artists to avoid shipping depictions in your artwork. Even the Lovers card isn't necessarily about romantic love -- we want to make this a deck that as many players as possible will want to enjoy! When assigning characters and locations to cards, we considered both the upright and reversed meanings of each card carefully, and we encourage our artists to do the same when drawing. You can take that literally and design your card in such a way that its mood changes when turned upside-down, or you can take it in a more subtle direction without taking into account that your art may be viewed in reverse if it is used as an actual tarot card.
If at all possible, please avoid using text in your artwork. Each card will need to have its name overlaid on top of your art, along with a border design, and we don't want those things to become cluttered. Logos are acceptable; if your piece features text that is problematic, staff will alert you. Please work in RGB color with a minimum of 300 DPI, and with your minimum canvas dimensions being those we provide to you in the Discord server. If you are confused or unsure about any of those items, get in touch with a member of staff before you start drawing!
We welcome 3D artists, as well as traditional artists, but you will need access to a high-quality scanner if working traditionally and will need to adhere to the dimensions we provide. 3D artists will need to provide a high-res PNG of their finished render. While Destiny features violence, death, etc., we ask our artists to avoid excessive gore or any sexual elements in their work. Based on the assignments, we don't anticipate this to be an issue, but please don't hesitate to reach out to staff if you're unsure of your idea, and know that part of working on this project will include being open to feedback from us about your piece so that we can keep this deck cohesive, beautiful, and enjoyable for everyone.
Meet the admin!
Howdy, I'm Stars! (They/them) I'm 25 years old and I've been playing Destiny 2 since October of 2021. I'm a Hunter main, and most of the art here features my Exo, Orchidia-3. I very quickly fell in love with this game and its rich world and amazing characters, and apparently the way I show that love is by combining them with tarot cards. Over the past several years I've participated in a few dozen zines and moderated 6, including 2 previous tarot decks, so I'm familiar with things on both sides of the aisle, so to speak, and comfortable managing a large number of people. I'm your main point of contact on this project: the main admin, the one handing out assignments and answering questions, and the one swatting you with a newspaper if you miss your deadlines! I'm so looking forward to sharing art with everyone and meeting new folks who love Destiny!
